The Economist August 17th 2019 1 The world this week Politics An indicative vote in Argentina's presidential election suggested that the opposition, led by Alberto Fernández with the country's previous president, Cristina , as his running-mate, would handily win the actual election in October. The Argentine peso shed a quarter of its value against the dollar and its main stockmarket fell by 37%. Investors fear the return of Ms Fernández, whose policies between 2007 and 2015 ruined the economy.

PAGE 11, 13 and 14........WOW and then there was THIS: Watergate Seven go on trial by GARY_SATANOVSKY The hotel still stands today, in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., its name inscribed on the U.S. Register of Historic Place ensuring neither the building nor the story which it stands for will be forgotten any time soon. What used to refer to the cluster of luxury apartment buildings, offices, and a hotel, has come to be shorthand for political scandals (–gates) of every stripe. It started with the discovery of a break-in that led to the implication of a president, which almost led to an impeachment preempted only by a president resigning from office. On this day, October 3, in 1974, a full month after the resignation of President Nixon, his aides went on trial. The Watergate Seven, as they were called, white house staff, were charged separately, with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, perjury, and a raft of other misdeeds.Five of the seven were convicted, serving no more than a year and a half in prison (charges against one were overturned on appeal). Charges against Gordon Creighton Strachan, an aide to co-defendant H.R. Haldeman, Chief of Staff for Nixon, were dropped before the trial (Haldeman himself was convicted). Kenneth Parkinson, a member of the counsel for the Committee to Re-elect the President, was acquitted at trial when it was determined Nixon’s aide G. Gordon Liddy was the chief counsel (Liddy was tried and convicted earlier). AND NOW THIS: Trump discussed Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren with China in phone call hidden on secure server: report Written by Cody Fenwick October 4, 2019 President Donald Trump discussed the “political prospects” of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Vice President Joe Biden in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 18, according to a CNN report published Thursday night. The report did not say that Trump pressured Xi to investigate Biden, pressure that Trump did apply to the Ukrainian president in a July 25 phone call. That conversation triggered a reinvigorated push for impeachment in the House of Representatives. However, Trump did suggest publicly on Thursday that China should investigate Biden. CNN found that a record of Trump’s conversation with Xi was “later stored in the highly secured electronic system used to house a now-infamous phone call with Ukraine’s President and which helped spark a whistleblower complaint that’s led Democrats to open an impeachment inquiry into Trump.” Some experts and commentators have argued that using the system to conceal politically sensitive — but not codeword classified — materials would be an improper abuse of power. According to the report, Chinese officials were stunned by Trump’s remarks on Thursday: “Are you asking about the comments that Trump just made? I don’t think I can tell you anything in this regard right now, ” said one Chinese diplomat when questioned on Thursday about Trump’s remarks. “This is quite chaotic, ” the diplomat said. “We do not want to get in the middle of the US politics.” One Trump ally outside the White House described receiving a message from Chinese government officials asking if Trump was serious when he suggested China open an investigation into Biden. The response: investigating corruption is an easy way to earn goodwill with Trump. In addition, there was another stunning claim in the report of the June 18 call: “Trump also told Xi he would remain quiet on Hong Kong protests as trade talks progressed.” This suggests that Trump communicated he had little interest in human rights or democracy, but only in his narrow transactional politics.
